Tin Hau, the Goddess of the Sea, is believed to have been able to forecast the weather and save people from shipwrecks. Therefore fishermen visit temples making offerings and hold a variety of celebrations asking for safety and fine weather. And the 23rd day of the third Lunar month is designated as the birthday of Tin Hau.
Every year, seafarers descend upon Joss House Bay in Sai Kung in a flotilla of boats adorned with colourful flags giving thanks to Tin Hau (the goddess) for her protection. Joss House Bay is home to Hong Kong’s oldest Tin Hau Temple which was built in 1266. This year, many colourfully decorated fishing boats and an authentic Chinese junk, Duk Ling, will sail through Victoria Harbour in one of the city’s largest spectacular boat parades on their way to Joss House Bay.
